Those that followed Nathan Fillion’s career through “Firefly” were excited to see that he landed another starring role on television in 2009 with “Castle”. The show centered around Fillion playing Richard Castle, a novelist that worked with Kate Beckett (played by Stana Katic) to solve crimes in New York City. Katic’s character was reluctant to work alongside Fillion’s on the show at first, and that would end up translating into real life as Katic and Fillion just could not get along.
Ratings were fairly strong for “Castle” throughout the first six seasons, then started to take a hit by season seven. In the eighth and final season, ratings had dropped to nearly half of what they were during the peak of the series. In April 2016, ABC producers said that Stana Katic wouldn’t be returning to the show if it was renewed for a ninth season even though other cast members were signed on. Instead of continuing without her, the producers pulled the plug and aired the final episode on May 16, 2016 just four days after announcing it would be the final one.
The official word that came from ABC about Katic’s departure said that it was “budgetary reasons,” though sources that were close to the situation said that was the entire story. Apparently, a feud had been going on between Katic and Fillion. One source said that “Stana would cry on set because Nathan was such a bully to her,” adding that she would “go in her dressing room and cry.”
Another source said that “Everyone is upset over Stana’s departure even though we feared for some time it was coming...She and Nathan have not been getting along for a few years now, even though in the beginning they became fast friends and it was even rumored they were dating.” Scenes featuring the two actors started to become less common even though their characters would eventually become romantically involved.
It’s hard to tell who to believe in the situation as Katic’s representative said that the relationship between the two was fine, but didn’t elaborate very much. Katic started to make more money on the show, and the source claimed that “Nathan became more and more distant” as a result. Katic started to make nearly as much money as Fillion toward the end of the show, and budget cuts due to lower ratings meant that she would be making less, which does give some validity to the “budgetary” rumors.
Yet another source added that the eighth and final season almost didn’t happen, claiming that “It’s no secret there is no love lost between these two. Things got so bad between them this past season that when one of them walked onto the set, the other one walked off.” Us Weekly even reported that the two had to go to couple’s therapy even though it was only their characters that were romantically involved.
Katic released a statement shortly after the show’s cancellation, saying “Rather than distract from what was an amazing experience, I would just like to say that I’m very grateful to ABC for giving me the opportunity to be a part of a much beloved show.” Meanwhile, Fillion released a statement saying “Stana has been my partner all this time, and I thank her for creating the character of Beckett who will love on for all us as one of the greatest police officers on television.”
Though they didn’t say anything negative about each other, they didn’t really make any comment about how sad it was that the two would no longer be working together, which definitely opened the door for more rumors to come out about their rift. ABC said that “We are grateful for Stana Katic’s talent and dedication to the series and we hope to continue our relationship (with her).” ABC might feel that way, but we may never know just how Fillion felt about the relationship between the two of them.
