“In a girl, I look for honesty above all, someone who I can carry on a conversation with, someone who has a good sense of humor, someone who’s true to herself, and to top it, someone who can get ready for a date in less than ten minutes.” Perhaps better known for his signature blonde locks and surfer boy style, Erik Thomas von Detten certainly got off to a good start in Hollywood with notable roles in silver screen and television hits like Toy Story, Escape to Witch Mountain, The Princess Diaries, So Weird, Complete Savages and Brink! And, while he may not be an A-list actor today, the 34-year-old has held onto his good looks as he navigates the next chapter in his career.

Hailing from a large family of seven in San Diego, California, von Detten was born on October 3, 1982 as one of five children to a German immigrant named Volker and his wife, an American photographer named Susan. With his mother having a strong interest in the arts, von Detten was sure to follow in his mother’s footsteps only to find that his interest and talent landed him in front of the camera rather than behind. He started to audition at a very early age and, at only nine years old, made his silver screen debut as a member of the choir in the 1991 film All I Want for Christmas. Fortunately, his luck in Hollywood would only improve.

In 1992, the 10-year-old von Detten landed his first major role as Nicholas Alamain on NBC’s popular daytime soap opera Days of Our Lives. Despite only working on the series for a year, von Detten’s character was involved in one of the soap’s leading storylines as he accidentally killed his father’s mistress. The major plot twist helped put von Detten on the map as a young star in Hollywood as one reporter later wrote, “[von Detten’s character] pushed the woman, she fell, hit her head and died, which threw the show into a whole new storyline that von Detten remained an integral part of until his departure in 1993. While other cast members died, came back to life, broke up, and made up several times over, von Detten moved beyond the boundaries of the small town soap while the days of everyone else’s lives trickled like sands through the hourglass.”

After a brief stint on daytime television, von Detten returned to the silver screen as the voice of the evil toy destroyer Sid Phillips in Disney’s 1995 blockbuster Toy Story. The same year, he appeared in a string of television films including Escape to Witch Mountain, A Season of Hope and Kidnapped: In the Line of Duty in addition to making an appearance on ER in the “Hell and High Water” episode. By 1996, von Detten was a regular name in Hollywood and starred in ABC Family’s made-for-television film Christmas Every Day with an appearance in the popular hit series 7th Heaven before taking on the role as Wally Cleaver in the 1997 family film Leave It to Beaver.

Despite ongoing work as a voice actor in projects like Tarzan, Toy Story Treats, Recess and The Wild Thornberrys, von Detten’s next major break came in the 2001 blockbuster The Princess Diaries where he starred as the jerk Josh Bryant with a star-studded cast including Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews. With the film praised by critics and bringing in $165.3 million worldwide, the 19-year-old von Detten was in high demand as he made appearances on television hits like The Mole, Dinotopia, Celebrity Mole Hawaii, Malcolm in the Middle and Disney’s So Weird.

After a few years of one-off television roles, von Detten’s acting opportunities started dwindling by 2007 when he turned his attention to the stage and made his first theatrical performance in a Santa Monica production of The Christmas Princess children’s play. Two years later, he made a cameo in Jessie James’ “Wanted” music video and, by 2010, he reprised his role as Sid Phillips in Toy Story 3. By then, his character was well into his 20s and had taken a job as a garbage man. On that note, von Detten vanished from the Hollywood scene.

With Toy Story 3 marking his last job in Hollywood, fans have kept a close eye out for von Detten to make an appearance in Tinsel Town over the last seven years. In fact, there’s very little to find about von Detten online with HelloGiggles.com—which is, coincidentally, founded by actress Zooey Deschanel—reporting, “Now we’ve gotta admit that information about him is actually very scarce. It’s clear from the lack of IMDB credits that von Detten has left Hollywood behind maybe not forever, but at least for night now.” So, what’s he doing now that he’s out of the spotlight?

Although von Detten appears to have a Facebook page where he lists his employment as a broker for Rosland Capital, the profile has yet to be verified. Instead, his whereabouts remains a mystery with only a few recent pictures of von Detten hanging out with his sister and friends making the rounds online. In 2016, he was spotted on the red carpet to celebrate Disney’s 100 original movies during the premiere for the remake of the 80s classic Adventures in Babysitting. Shocking the media with his appearance, von Detten walked the carpet in slacks paired with a black blazer and a button-down blue shirt with only his wardrobe signifying he’d matured over the years.

Since then, the 34-year-old von Detten has disappeared from the spotlight, which we have to believe is by choice especially after seeing that he’s managed to hold onto his boyish good looks after all these years. If he truly is working as a broker in Marina del Rey, we wish him the best of luck in the next chapter of his career out of the spotlight and in the real world!
