"Whatever I do, I hope it's quality, I hope it's something that's class." Even if you’re not a country music fan, there are a few names that you certainly know from this genre of music. One of those names is Garth Brooks, who actually holds the record for most albums sold as a solo act with 148 million units moved. That’s ahead of the likes of Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley, which is nothing short of phenomenal. The Oklahoma born country star was a huge bridge between classic and modern country music, and it was thanks to hit songs like “Friends in Low Places”, “If Tomorrow Never Comes” and “The Dance”. When most people (especially the younger crowd) thinks of Garth Brooks and his relationships, they tend to think of fellow country singer Trisha Yearwood. The two had been friends since back in the 1980s when neither was signed by a record label and had immediate chemistry. Brooks said that meeting Yearwood for the first time, “It’s strange because I felt that feeling like when you just meet your wife, but I’d been married for 13 months.”

That’s the thing, Brooks was already married to Sandy Mahl, a woman that he had met in college at Oklahoma State University, and she was a songwriter at the time. Brooks and Mahl tied the knot on May 24, 1986, and along the way they had three daughters. All the while, Yearwood had also found love, marrying bassist Bobby Reynolds, going through a divorce, remarrying and then divorcing again.

Brooks announced that he and Mahl would be separating in early 1999, and said that they had planned on getting a divorce in late 2000. It took quite some time for the divorce to be finalized, as it wasn’t until the final days of 2001 that everything was settled. At the time of their split, Brook ssaid that “Sandy and I both agree that we need to get divorced. Right now, we’re focused on the impact it will have on the children and how to handle that best, to remain parents even if we don’t remain husband and wife.”

Because of the divorce and wanting to spend more time with his children, Brooks took an extended break from touring for the first time in more than a decade. It allowed him to get closer to his children, Though he’s back on the stage now, Brooks really needed that break in the late 1990s and early 2000s to get his mind right.

It was also an expensive break for Brooks, as the reported settlement that Sandy Mahl received was a whopping $125 million, making it one of the most expensive divorces ever recorded. Brooks wouldn’t move too far away from Mahl after the divorce, however, as spending time with his children was important, even as he started a new relationship. Brooks would stick around in Oklahoma until his daughters all graduated high school, then moving to Tennessee.

With $125 million taken out of his bank account, a break in his touring and the passing of his mother, Yearwood was there for Brooks when things were at their worst. Some said that Brooks had had it all coming (at least in terms of the divorce) as he admitted to the public that he had cheated on Mahl in the past. In an interview back in 1993, Brooks said that he was caught being unfaithful, and only got back together “after I wore out a pair of jeans while I was down on my knees begging her to take me back,” he said.

Still, irreconcilable differences would get the best of the couple, and Brooks was back on the market. It really didn’t take long following the divorce before Brooks and Yearwood were officially a couple, being spotted holding hands for the first time in 2002, which of course led to them making the announcement that they were an item.

Brooks said that starting a relationship with Yearwood just seemed natural. “You keep hacking (at marriage), you work and you work and then comes that time where you’re looking at the rest of your life going, ‘How do you want to live it?’” He said. “(Trisha) is somebody who I always enjoyed being around, and we had a lot more in common than I ever dreamed we did and we started seeing each other after the divorce, after we came off tour.”

In 2005, the couple would get engaged and announced that their wedding would be later in the year. It was a small wedding between the two with just four family members in attendance, and they’ve been together ever since as country music’s most powerful couple. Despite the expensive divorce earlier in his career, Brooks is still worth an estimated $280 million.

As for Mahl, she hasn’t been married since her divorce with Brooks, and instead focused on philanthropic acts. Mahl became a co-founder for the Wild Heart Ranch in Oklahoma that adopts injured and ill wild animals and rehabilitates them back to health. It might have been one of the most expensive divorces in music history, but it was far from the nastiest. Brooks and Mahl seemed to remain on good terms as they focused more on being parents, and neither party has trashed the other in the media.
