Modeling has been a profession for a very long time, though, but it seems that in recent years we’ve seen a massive rise in the model population. Social media has a lot to do with that, as people can post their pictures on sites like Instagram to find modeling fame. One of the more popular young models that you see with a massive following on social media is Gigi Hadid, who has modeling in her blood, so it seemed natural that she’d follow in those footsteps.Advertisements:
Hadid’s father is Mohamed Hadid, a man that has made hundreds of millions for his work in the real estate business. Her mother is Dutch model Yolanda van den Herik, and the two were married throughout much of the 1990s. Before their daughter Bella and son Anwar, the couple had their first child on April 23, 1995 when Gigi was born in Los Angeles, California.
All of the Hadid children would make their way to modeling, with Gigi being the first. Before starting her career, Hadid had spent her early life going to school in Southern California where she excelled at sports. Once she finished high school, Hadid headed to the opposite side of the country, moving to New York City for both school and modeling. However, school had to be put on hold for Hadid as she decided to go into modeling full-time after having plenty of experience in her youth.
“High school is when I started to get my sense of fashion together,” Hadid said. “My queen was Candice Swanepoel, who is a friend of mine now, which is kind of funny. But in high school, I was obsessed. I love her street style; she is always in cool boyfriend jeans, boots, and an awesome coat, which is very much like what I wear.”
With that, Hadid landed with the IMG modeling agency, which is perhaps the most well known in the world currently. Shortly thereafter, Hadid started appearing on magazine covers and was modeling with some of the most prominent fashion designers and popping up in advertising campaigns. From there, it didn’t take long until everyone knew Hadid’s name, especially as her mother was being featured on reality television.
Hadid was named the Model of the Year in 2015 and hasn’t looked back ever since. Her presence in social media and throughout entertainment as a whole continues to increase. She now has nearly 50 million followers on Instagram, placing her in the top 40 with the likes of basketball star LeBron James and actress Emma Watson.
“We get to live in a time that we get to use social media as a tool,” Hadid said. “It’s not just a face on a piece of paper, and that’s what makes you someone’s favorite model. We can have a very similar sense of humor as someone, and that’s why we’re their favorite model, or our personal style, off the runway, is why we’re their favorite.”
Hadid has naturally made a lot of appearances on television, mostly as herself. She had made her acting debut in 2012 with a short film called “Virgin Eyes”, but since then has had all of her acting work done in music videos. She’s worked with the likes of Taylor Swift, Calvin Harris and Zayn, as well as a pair of music videos with Cody Simpson. Hadid has had reality television appearances on shows such as “Masterchef”, “Lip Sync Battle” and “RuPaul’s Drag Race” in recent years with a cameo appearance in the 2018 film “Ocean’s 8”.
“I’ve learned that if I only put my mind to one thing that I can get tunnel vision,” Hadid said of wanting to branch out into other ventures. “Then I may not be as open to other opportunities because I’m so focused on one thing. I think what’s worked better for me personally is I have three goals every day: be nice, work hard and make friends.”
Hadid adds that networking is a big part of being able to get connected, so you should always treat people well. “It’s really about making opportunities for yourself and connecting with people on a more than normal level,” she said. “That opens doors. You never know if the caterer’s brother is someone. You don’t know who someone is having dinner with that night. So being a nice person and touching people creates opportunity.”
Now, along with her sister and brother, the Hadid family has already begun to take over the modeling world. That doesn’t mean that Gigi doesn’t spend her time as an older sister first and foremost. “(Bella) is my little star,” Gigi said. “And I’m excited for her and proud of her. With her, I’m protective, but also I don’t want to be that sister who’s really pushy and thinks they know everything and making her feel like she doesn’t know what she’s doing. I’m trying to be that cool older sister and not the mom, but it’s hard.”
Whenever someone gets into the modeling industry that’s had parents in the same business, there’s always going to be critics that cite nepotism. However, Hadid has been quick to dispel this notion. “No, I’m not the first or last model of my type in this industry,” she said. “You can make up all the reasons you think I am where I am, but really, I’m a hard worker that’s confident in myself - one that came at a time where the fashion industry was ready for a change.”
