Thanks to the Disney Channel movie “High School Musical”, people were all about teenagers singing in the halls of their schools. FOX capitalized on the craze big time, coming up with the show “Glee” in 2009. The show followed William McKinley High School and the glee club, dealing with all of the issues that the modern teenager faces. “Glee” had several songs reach the top 40 charts, with most of them being adaptations of popular songs, and it easily enters into the top 40 in terms of shows that had a lot of drama on the set.

One thing that you likely remember that was not hidden by the producers was the tragic death of Cory Monteith, who played Finn on the show. Monteith passed away in 2013 due to a combination of heroin and alcohol before the fifth season of “Glee”, and his character’s death was written into the show. The cast was incredibly shocked and saddened by the death, especially co-star Lea Michele, who was his girlfriend at the time.

Then there were secrets from the set that were recently revealed by Naya Rivera, who played Santana Lopez. The secrets were released in her book “Sorry Not Sorry: Dreams, Mistakes and Growing Up,” and it raised a lot of eyebrows. It turns out that drug use, adult situations and more were all part of the “Glee” cast.

Rivera revealed that the cast would often go into one of the actors’ trailers (and then the shared house of Kevin McHale and Jenna Ushkowitz) after shooting or rehearsing and start playing a very mature version of Spin the Bottle as she called the house “The Love Nest”, referring to a “sex den of a house.” It was at the same house that the cast members decided to try and get new cast member Chord Overstreet high for the first time by giving him a lot of marijuana infused gummy bears.

It wasn’t just the studio or the house where they got wild, as there as a “Glee” musical tour where things got even crazier. Rivera claimed that on McHale’s birthday, “We all gathered in his room to celebrate. Heather (Morris) did a dance in her panties, and I’m pretty sure Cory (Monteith) had a hard-on the entire time.” She also said that she and Monteith were very close, and had almost a sibling-like relationship.

Monteith revealed to many of the cast members that he had a substance abuse problem in the past, but he had been sober for the first few seasons of “Glee”. When the cast was celebrating the wrap of the third season, Monteith ordered an alcoholic drink to everyone’s surprise. At the time, they didn’t think much about it since Monteith said he was going to try and drink in moderation like everybody else, as she said “I don’t think many of us really understood how addiction worked.”

The relationship between Michele and Monteith also rubbed people the wrong way when they started dating in 2011 according to Rivera. Rivera said “The more serious they got, the less Cory hung out with us and the more he seemed like a different person.” She did admit that Michele had a positive influence on his health at first, but unfortunately it wouldn’t last. Rivera and Michele started out as friends on set, too, but that relationship eventually deteriorated.

Rivera said that Michele was jealous and was quick to point fingers as Rivera started to get more screen time. When something went wrong on set, Rivera claims that Michele would blame her instantly. “If I’d complained about anyone or anything, she assumed I was (talking) about her,” Rivera said. “Soon she started to ignore me, and eventually it got to the point where she didn’t say a word to me for all of season six” despite the fact that they still played friends on the show.

One last secret that Rivera shared was about her abortion while still on “Glee”. She and Ryan Dorsey (who is now her husband) had broken up for a brief period when she found out that she was pregnant. Rivera went incognito to a Planned Parenthood location in California, paying “cash, leaving no paper trail, like it was a drug deal.” This wasn’t that something that producers hid from the audience, although they would have if not for the fact that Rivera hid it from producers. She also revealed that she hasn’t “emotionally healed” from that day. It was a pretty shocking tell-all that Rivera was willing to put out a year after “Glee” ended.
