There have been plenty of shows about hospitals, and there have been plenty of shows featuring large casts. Not all of them last for very long, but “Grey’s Anatomy” has certainly been the exception. Starting in 2005 as a replacement show during the middle of the spring season, “Grey’s Anatomy” has been a big hit for ABC, and has now reached more than a decade on the air. That said, it hasn’t been without its ups and downs during its long run.
The Shonda Rhimes created show features plenty of drama and romance, though a lot of the biggest storylines from “Grey’s” have come from real life. With a cast that large, you are bound to have some people butting heads when the cameras aren’t rolling, and a lot of people trying to jump over one another for more camera time. Perhaps the person that created the most headlines was Katherine Heigl, who played Izzie Stevens.
The feud for Heigl started when she withdrew her name for Emmy consideration back in 2008, claiming that the storylines on “Grey’s” were lackluster and not worthy of winning an award, claiming that “I did not want to potentially take away an opportunity from an actress who was given such materials.” Shonda Rhimes was in charge of the show, and she clearly wasn’t happy with the comments.
Heigl told Howard Stern that she went into Rhimes’ office to apologize, telling the radio host she said “I’m so sorry. That wasn’t cool and I should not have done that.” She said that in the middle of her apology, Rhimes interrupted with a “Shut up, Katie.” Heigl also said that the cast struggling for more airtime also took a toll on some people, saying that “you feel selfish and then you feel like you’re not being fair somehow. But everybody has to look out for themselves.”
Eventually, Heigl would leave the show in 2010, citing the need to spend more time with family, including adopting a 16 month old girl. When Heigl’s maternity leave was over, she did not return to the set and it was found out that she was off of the show. The rumors, though, said that Heigl was incredibly difficult to work with and that she was feuding with producers, executives, crew members and other actors.
In the years that followed, Heigl said that she felt like “the biggest piece of s***” for how things went down, especially after a 2014 interview by Shonda Rhimes when she bashed Heigl’s behavior on the set. Heigl wasn’t the only one that left show, and it was hard on star Ellen Pompeo who said “it was tough.” Pompeo also stated that there have been a lot of “Hurt feelings, combined with instant success and huge paychecks started things spinning out of control” on “Grey’s”.
Of course, the biggest thing that happened behind the scenes of “Grey’s Anatomy” was the fiasco involving Isaiah Washington. The actor played Dr. Preston Burke, and he got into an argument with co-star T.R. Knight. Washington reportedly called him a “f***ot” on the set before Knight had come out. When Washington said the same word behind the scenes at the Golden Globe Awards, he was let go from the show and didn’t return until an appearance in 2014.
So what else happened on the set? There might not be enough time to list it all. Here are just some of the things that have happened according to sources. How true they are is still questionable, but it’s definitely interesting.
-Justin Chambers and Camilla Luddington had an affair according to people that spotted them at a bar.
-Patrick Dempsey also reportedly had an affair with a young woman that worked on the show’s crew leading to his divorce.
-Eric Dane got hooked on painkillers after an injury, went to rehab and had an adult tape leaked of he and his wife, Rebecca Gayheart.
-Most of the cast just plain doesn’t like one another.
With all of that going on in the past decade, it’s a wonder that the show has lasted as long as it has. That’s quite the testament to some of the producers and star Ellen Pompeo who has somehow kept her sanity through it all.
