In 2005, Craig Thomas and Carter Bays developed a show that would become a huge hit for 20 and 30 somethings that followed five friends living in New York City. Ted (Josh Radnor), Marshall (Jason Segel), Lily (Alyson Hannigan), Robin (Cobie Smulders) and Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) made up one of the most likeable casts on television in the past decade.
Since the name of the show was “How I Met Your Mother”, the big plot reveal at the end would be the title of the show, it just took more than eight seasons to get to that point. People were a little let down by the ending (and spoilers ahead if you haven’t seen it) about how the mother suddenly died in the last episode of the series within minutes of showing their wedding. In the end, the show probably could have been called “How I Met Your Aunt Robin and Had Relationships With Her then Broke Up and Then Met Your Mother and Got Back With Your Aunt Robin Now That We’re Old”. It doesn’t really roll off the tongue, though.
Throughout the series, the voice of Ted (narrated by Bob Saget for some reason) told the two children on the show stories about his friends and his eventual wife. If you notice something over the nine seasons of the show, though, it’s that the children don’t really seem to age. That’s quite the feat since they didn’t know how long the show would last, so how did they pull that stunt off?
It turned out that the final scene in the series was filmed all the way back at the beginning of season two which aired in 2006. They also filmed many of the scenes with the two children (Lyndsy Fonseca and David Henrie) who would stop Ted from his story to ask questions every now and then. Cobie Smulders credited the show’s creators, saying that they were so smart that they had planned on shooting this way on the first day of filming season one.
Thomas and Bays said that “If we waited until the finale of the series, the kids would have aged like six years. So yeah, part of our plan for how we want to end it all has already been done.” That means that even if they wanted to change the series’ ending, they would have had to throw away all of their continuity that they worked so hard on creating. No wonder they still went with it.
One thing you might remember about the beginning of the show (when Ted and Robin actually met) is that Robin used to have a pack of dogs in her house that she cared for deeply. All of a sudden, Robin didn’t have the dogs anymore because she gave them away. In the show, it was written that Robin was moving and couldn’t take the dogs with her. The real reason was because of Josh Radnor.
Radnor is very allergic to dogs and couldn’t be around them without showing signs that would affect his acting. He would need to bring tissues with him and his eyes would start to water, and that didn’t look good on camera. Knowing how much Radnor’s character would be around Robin’s apartment, they decided to get rid of the dogs. The hardest part of this decision was the fact that the producers were unaware of Radnor’s allergy until he was already cast on the show.
“How I Met Your Mother” also had one of the characters (Lily played by Hanigan) who was pregnant during filming in real life. Like many other shows, the producers did not want her character to be pregnant yet so they hid it from audiences. Well, with the exception of a throwaway scene where her stomach was noticeably larger after winning an eating contest.
