Violent crime is a big problem in just about any major city, and Albany is no exception. Though Albany ranks well below the national average in violent crime, having any number above zero still motivates people to raise awareness on preventing this type of crime. In 2018, Albany had its deadliest year in violent crime, and the police are making sure that the record is never broken again.Advertisements:

“I don’t think this city wants to go through that again,” said resident Jamil Hood of the 2018 crime statistics. Now, Hood is interacting with the youth of Albany to make sure that the next generation in Albany sees a drop in violent crime. Basketball courts have been a target for Hood, who has been playing with youngsters while also communicating, hoping to reduce violent crime.

Hood caught the attention of the Albany Public Library System, who has helped to expand his community outreach by holding seminars and opening up new programs for Albany youths. “The fact that people did come out to talk about the problems, the fact that we’ve seen a lot more adults walking in the door, I think there’s a realization now that this is our city and we all have to work together to find ways to kind of solve the violence issues,” Scott Jarzombek of the APLS said.

The Guardian Angels, a community watch group, also joined in with Hood and the APLS. Curtis Silwa, the group’s founder, said that “As they become adults, hopefully some of them will become police and social service workers and will help in remedying the problem,” of the violent crime in Albany.
