A little girl named Maia in Croydon Hills, Australia was ecstatic to receive a puppy as part of the family, but it didn’t seem like the joy would last for long. Maia had been given a labrador puppy by her parents, and after just one week they couldn’t find the dog that she named Sasha. They frantically looked around the house and the four-year-old girl was stunned and devastated.
“I was heartbroken,” her mother Elena said after seeing that the puppy was gone. “I’m still shaking…we are really sad. Even though it’s a short period of time, it’s enough to get attached and feel part of the family.”
It was fairly early in the morning when Sasha went missing, and the family discovered that many other items including jewelry and expensive electronics had also gone missing. With that, the family called the police and filed a report. Still, it was the puppy that the family missed the most, with Elena saying “I don’t care about the rest but the dog, we want her home as soon as possible.” She said “It’s heartbreaking to think someone would take a dog, she’s only an eight-week-old puppy, she can’t fend for herself, so it’s really painful.”
In hopes that others had seen the puppy around town, they started putting up posters. Sasha has a medical condition, which added more fear for the family. “She’s little, she’s not supposed to interact with other dogs so she might get sick if the right thing is not done,” Elena said. Officer Adam Leggo started investigating the case, saying “It’s a bit of a strange one. It’s difficult to understand what (the burglars) were thinking.”
He added that “I guess it’s probably an isolated incident, where they’ve just committed a burglary and they’ve seen the dog and they’ve taken the dog.” The dog had a microchip, so Leggo said “We’re going to be able to trace the dog if it goes to any vet clinics or receives and medical treatment or even if a ranger was to find the dog, we’d be able to return it to its owner…There was no other way the dog could have gotten out without being taken.”
A few days after the story started making the news, what seemed to be a miracle happened for Maia and her family. They woke up in the morning to find Sasha in their backyard, apparently dropped off by the burglars. Maia’s father Ryan said “We didn’t want to get our hopes up. And then this morning, my wife got up to make herself a coffee, walked past the sliding door and noticed that there was a figure moving by the kennel.”
It seemed that the thieves were remorseful for stealing a little girl’s dog. “We think that whoever took her has either has a conscience or got scared and just dropped her over the fence…we don’t care to be honest, we’re just glad to have her back,” he said.
Thankfully, despite having a medical condition, it seemed that Sasha had been able to avoid any further complications, though she did start nibbling on shoes more according to Ryan. Elena added that “All of a sudden, she was back…It’s like we won! Because we got her back and that’s the most important thing. Our family is reunited!”
Not only was the dog returned in good health, but Maia’s spirits instantly lifted when being reunited with her friend. “She changed completely,” Elena said. “It’s so good to see her happy again…they’ve been through a lot.”
The local police posted an update about the story with many relieved to see Maia get her dog back, but said that they’re work wasn’t done. A burglary had still occurred and the other items were missing from the home. As for Maia and her parents, the relief that they get from having Maia back is certainly enough to keep them happy.
