For more than 40 years, there have been few actors that have enjoyed the type of success that Robert De Niro has had. De Niro had come onto the scene when he was in his early 20s, appearing in a handful of films in the 1960s and early 1970s before he had finally hit it big. The big breakthrough for De Niro would come in 1973 when he starred in “Bang the Drum Slowly”, which opened up opportunities to work in memorable films including “Mean Streets” and the life-changing role of Vito Corleone in “The Godfather Part II”. The role would be the first time that De Niro was nominated for an Oscar, which he won for the category of Best Supporting Actor. Since then, De Niro has been nominated for six more Academy Awards for his roles in films such as “Silver Linings Playbook”, “Cape Fear” and “Taxi Driver”. His first win for Best Actor would come thanks to his lead role in “Raging Bull”.

There have been more than 100 film credits for De Niro over his long career, with his films pulling in a combined $3.23 billion at the box office in the United States alone. So far, his most successful films have actually come from the comedy world, as “Meet the Parents” and “Meet the Fockers” would end up being two of the biggest hits in comedy history.

Throughout the course of his career, De Niro has been married twice. Since 1997, De Niro has been married to philanthropist Grace Hightower. At the time that they met, Hightower had been working at a restaurant in London named Mr. Chow, and the two would hit it off. Shortly after getting married, De Niro and Hightower would have their first child together, but problems started to arise rather quickly.

In 1999, De Niro had filed for divorce from Hightower, and then a custody battle over their new son would start in the early 2000s. Over the course of the next couple of years, though, the two would start to patch things up and get back together. They then renewed their vows and have been together ever since, having a second child along the way.

When asked what their secret was to reconciling a marriage that had seemed to be lost, Hightower said that “I would say a lot of give and take, standing your ground, because then you keep the respect you started out with.” Apparently when they had met, Hightower had said that he was an annoying customer and she didn’t know who De Niro was. Those feelings would change rather quickly, as they have been together for more than 20 years now.

Before he had met Hightower, De Niro had been married for more than a decade, having met his first wife Diahnne Abbott. Abbott had worked as an actress herself, making her debut in the De Niro film “Taxi Driver” in 1976. The two would appear in a couple of more films together, and made her most recent appearance in 2002’s “Soliloquy”.

De Niro and Abbott would get married in 1976, and had a son along the way while she also brought in a child that she had from a previous marriage. That child would eventually be adopted by De Niro himself, and she might be a familiar face to you as she’s actress Drena De Niro. Even though De Niro and Abbott would get divorced in 1988, Drena has continued to appear in many of the films her father stars in, including “The Intern” and “Joy” in recent years.

Some had become critical of De Niro’s work following his divorce, saying that he’s taken on roles that don’t match his talent in recent years. One studio executive that became a producer said of De Niro that he was taking roles simply for the money. “I have a one word answer: alimony,” the producer said. “When you have alimony to pay, you do projects you wouldn’t think you’d do.” While De Niro didn’t respond to the claims, he did admit that “The only thing I would say is that if you get married, it’s easier probably not to have children if you’re going to split up - it makes life simpler.”

In the years since their divorce, we haven’t seen much of Abbott in film. Outside of her independent film roles, Abbott hasn’t been in the big time movies that her ex-husband has appeared in. As for De Niro, he might not get the critical acclaim that he once did, but is still one of the more recognizable actors around. The 75 year old was most recently in “The Comedian” and “Hands of Stone” over the past two years, and has upcoming films titled “The War with Grandpa” and “The Irishman” that he’s been working on. He’d also receive multiple award nominations for his 2017 role as Bernie Madoff in “The Wizard of Lies”.
