Candace Bushnell created a series of newspaper columns in 1997 called “Sex and the City” about four women nearing middle age that talk about their sex life while living in New York City. With that type of adult content, there was only one network that would be able to do justice to the book, and that was HBO. Darren Star adapted the book into the television series that would air the next year and cast Sarah Jessica Parker as Carrie Bradshaw, the main focus of the show.
The show was a massive hit with women (and even some men out there) that became one of the most talked about of the late 1990’s and early 2000’s and was nominated for more than 50 Emmy Awards. The popularity even spawned two movies that were released in 2008 and 2010, respectively and helped HBO grow more than ever before.
Writers took the situations that happened to the women on the show from real life. The rule that the writers had was that a storyline that happened in the show had to have happened to one of them in real life. Only first hand accounts, too, as outlandish as it sounds. That includes someone being dumped via a Post-it Note, painful as it may be.
Despite spending a lot of time on set together through six seasons of television, the stars and producers were able to keep any drama pretty quiet. It wasn’t until the two movies were released in subsequent years that we found out that the “Sex and the City” girls didn’t always get along on set. It turned out that the show had ended in the first place because of salary disputes and jealousy.
Kim Cattrall said that she had asked for a total of $1 million per episode, and the producers said that it wasn’t in the budget. Cattrall pointed out that Parker was making $3 million per episode, which was especially high since she was a producer on the show. With her producer credit, she might have been able to give Cattrall the pay raise she wanted. Cattrall said “I felt after six years it was time for all of us to participate in the financial windfall of ‘Sex and the City.’ When they didn’t seem keen on that, I thought it was time to move on.”
To bring Cattrall back for the “Sex and the City” films, she demanded that she gets an equal salary as Parker and the same amount of time on screen. In addition, she reportedly received an equal trailer and a top of the line makeup and hair team. They knew there was no other option as making a movie without Cattrall wouldn’t make much sense.
The drama on the movie set didn’t stop there, as a reunion party was held for the cast that sources say did not go over so well. The source said that “Kim and Sarah had words and obviously something was said that upset Kim and she just stormed out. It’s well known the girls are all quite feisty and opinionated...Everyone else at the party seemed quite embarrassed and shocked.”
The first film was scheduled to be released earlier, but it was the feuding between Parker and Cattrall that had things helped up for a couple of years. When filming for the second movie came around, the reports of dissention on set continued. Parker denied the rumors that cast members hated each other, but said that “Sometimes feelings get hurt,” adding that “When you’re on set, you’re working 90 hour weeks, you’re never home, you’re exhausted.”
Cynthia Nixon admitted that “It hasn’t always been smooth sailing, but the idea that we’re somehow adversarial is ridiculous.” Cattrall even said that “The chemistry among the four of us is very strong,” though the people working on set were saying differently. Reports said that Cattrall and Parker couldn’t be in the same room unless they were filming, and even had a fight nearly break out over who gets to wear a pair of shoes before Kristen Davis broke them up. Whether or not they are friends is still a mystery, but you don’t see them hanging around these days now that the series has had a bow tied on.
